We treat every piece of pre-owned hi-fi gear like the prized possession it is.
We know that vintage and high-end audio equipment isn’t just expensive – it’s often irreplaceable, full of history. That’s why we’ve developed a meticulous process for testing, packing, and shipping each item. We want you to feel 100% confident that when you purchase from us, your new (old) gear will arrive in perfect working order and in pristine condition, no matter if it’s traveling across the country or around the globe.
1. THOROUGH TESTING
Before we even think about boxing up a piece of equipment, we put it through its paces on our test bench. Dealing in high-end vintage audio is an art as much as a science, and we have decades of experience as professionals, hobbyists, and audiophiles. In other words, we know what to look for and listen for. Every unit undergoes a comprehensive functionality check.
Critical Listening
First, we hook up the component (whether it’s an amplifier, receiver, turntable, or speaker) to a reference system and listen carefully. We play music through it (at a healthy volume) to ensure it sounds as it should – with no unexpected noises. If component contains vacuum tubes all tube are tested on our state of the art Ampletrex tube tester to ensure they have at a minimum of 90% life left in them. If they don’t meet this spec they are replaced. After this, if the tube component is vintage we will likely slowly power it up via variac over the course of a day to reform capacitors as well as avoiding catastrophic failure. If we hear any buzzing, hiss, crackling, pops or distortion that shouldn’t be there, we investigate and address it. Our philosophy is simple: if it doesn’t sound right to us, it’s not leaving our door until it does.
All Inputs & Outputs Tested
We methodically test every input and output. With amplifiers and receivers, for example, we check each input source (Phono, Aux, Tape, etc.), both Speaker A & Speaker B outputs, the tuner section, headphone jacks – you name it. We flip every switch, turn every knob, and push every button to verify they function correctly (no scratchy pots or intermittent contacts on our watch!). If the unit has special features or modes, we test those too. By the time we’re done, we know the gear inside and out.
Inspection & Minor Servicing
While testing, we also give the unit a thorough visual inspection inside and out. We look for any signs of undue wear or aging (like leaky capacitors, frayed cables, or loose fittings) and we’ll take care of fixes as needed. Often it’s just a bit of TLC – cleaning a volume pot to eliminate crackle, replacing a power supply capacitors, or reseating vacuum tubes. We make sure dial lamps, displays, and other indicators are working and replace them if they are burnt out or appear dim. If there’s anything we can’t fully resolve (for example, a cosmetic blemish or a quirk due to age), we’ll clearly disclose it in the product listing along with any repairs made to the unit. Honesty is key to us, and we want you to know exactly what you’re getting.
Cosmetics
Our team will make components look like new. We give everything a nice cleaning inside and out. If there are cosmetic issues that can’t be repaired we DO NOT try to hide them with any hack repair methods. We leave them as is and disclose them in our sales listing.
What's the end result of this effort?
By the end of our testing process, we’re confident that the item is operating as well as it possibly can. Our team’s breadth of knowledge means we know how to handle and evaluate each piece of gear properly. And if you ever have questions about compatibility or performance with your own setup, just ask – we’re happy to advise…. we love geeking out about this stuff. Essentially, we won’t ship anything until we’d be happy to hook it up in our own listening room for years to come.
2. STEP-BY-STEP: OUR PACKING PROCESS
Once an item has passed all tests and been cleaned up, our focus shifts to packing – an area where we truly shine. We’ve been praised for having “the best packing in the business” and even “bombproof” packaging, and we take that reputation seriously. Making sure your audio equipment arrives undamaged is job #1 for us. Here’s how we pack your precious gear to withstand the bumps and jolts of shipping:
1. Secure Any Delicate Parts
Before boxing anything, we prepare the item itself. That might mean removing vacuum tubes from a tube amplifier (and packing them separately in their own cushioned boxes), locking down the platter and tonearm on a turntable, or detaching any fragile accessories. This prevents movement or damage to sensitive components in transit. We basically “batten down the hatches” on the unit so it’s ready for a safe journey.
2. Protective Wrapping
Next, we wrap the entire item to protect its finish to guard against moisture and abrasions. Corners and sharp edges may get special foam guards or additional padding at this stage. The goal is to create a cushion around the piece and ensure nothing can rub or scuff against it.
3. Custom Molded Foam Cushioning
Here’s where our packing really goes into high gear. Each item is expertly custom cushioned, either using its original factory packaging (if available and still robust) or with the worlds most popular and robust custom packing solution a foam-in-place system that molds to the equipment’s shape. We use a state-of-the-art Instapak® expanding foam system to create a form-fitting protective shell around the item. Essentially, we nestle the wrapped unit in a bed of foam that hardens to the contours of the equipment, absorbing shocks and preventing any movement. The item effectively “floats” in a well-padded cocoon.
4. Sturdy Boxing
We use high-quality double-wall corrugated boxes – they’re thick and tough, often rated to hold far more weight than the equipment itself. In the cases of heavier pieces like amplifiers and speakers we follow the same boxing procedure but then palletise them. When shipping modern McIntosh components we almost always purchase original boxes from McIntosh to be 110% sure your Mac arrives with it’s glass unbroken.
5. Sealing & Labeling
We seal every seam of the box (or boxes) with heavy-duty tape – often using water-activated reinforced tape that bonds strongly to the cardboard. The result is a rigid, well-sealed package. We mark the box with any necessary handling instructions (e.g., “This Side Up” for turntables or “Fragile Electronic Equipment”), although we pack assuming it will get tossed around (so even if a carrier ignores the labels, the gear is safe). Finally, we affix the shipping label and our return address, and the package is ready to go.
What's the end result of this effort?
A box that can be thrown off the back of a truck. (Because we know this sadly happens on all the time) (Seriously – one customer joked that our packing was so “genius” and secure, you could have thrown his turntable “off the roof safely” and it would have survived!)
3. SHIPPING & SAFE DELIVERY
Once your audio equipment is tested and packed to perfection, it’s time to ship it out. We coordinate the shipping process to be as quick and secure as possible. With 20+ years of experience shipping high-end audio gear “around the corner and across the globe,” we know how to choose the best carriers and methods for each situation. Here’s what to expect when we ship your item:
Trusted Carriers
We ship packages via reputable, trackable services like, FedEx, or USPS. We’ll pick the carrier that offers the best combination of speed, handling, and reliability for your particular item and location. Over the years we’ve built relationships and have access to competitive shipping rates, which we pass directly on to you – we don’t pad our shipping costs. If your item is being delivered within our region and is especially delicate, we might even use a specialty courier or “white glove” service to hand-deliver it. No matter who carries the package, we stay involved every step of the way.
Fast Turnaround
We don’t waste any time getting your purchase on its way. In most cases, as soon as your payment clears, we’ll usually have the item on the road within one business day. (If an item requires extremely intricate packing or crating, it could take up to three days to prepare – but we’ll keep you updated.) We’ll send you the tracking number right away so you can follow the shipment. Our warehouse is very experienced at efficiently processing orders, so you won’t be left waiting. We know you’re excited to receive your new gear, and we share that excitement – so we move quickly!
Full Insurance & Protection
Every shipment from us is fully insured for its value most often through a 3rd party. On the off chance that something does happen in transit (which is extremely rare with our packing), you’re covered. We will work with our insurer to handle any claims and solve the problem, but you won’t be left holding the bag. Our customers often tell us our proactive support gives them peace of mind. Essentially, until you have your equipment safely in hand and in good shape, we’re not going to consider the job done.
Freight for Oversized Items
For very large or heavy pieces of equipment – think giant floor-standing speakers or an 100-pound power amplifier – standard parcel shipping isn’t the safest option. In these cases, we utilize freight shipping on a pallet. The item (already cocooned in protective padding) gets strapped securely to a wooden pallet, sometimes even bolted down, and shipped via freight truck. This method avoids the chance that your item gets thrown from a delivery truck. Instead, your gear stays stationary on its pallet, and the entire pallet is loaded and unloaded with forklifts. It greatly reduces the chance of drops or severe jolts. It’s a bit more involved, but when you’re shipping something like a pair of rare 150-pound speakers, this extra caution is worth it. (If you ever purchase an item from us that we feel is better shipped via freight, we’ll coordinate all the details with you beforehand.)
Careful Coordination
We schedule pickups and deliveries to minimize transit time and avoid weekend warehousing whenever possible. If weather or holidays might impact the journey, we consider those factors as well. Our team monitors the tracking until we see that you’ve received the item. Rest assured, we’re as anxious as you are to see that delivery status show “Delivered – Signature Obtained.” In the unlikely event of a delay or issue, we’ll proactively reach out and assist in sorting it out. Communication is key.
FROM NEW YORK TO NEW ZEALAND
Our approach to shipping is designed to be fast, safe, and transparent. We’ve shipped over 100,000 pieces of audio equipment to every corner of the world, from New York to New Zealand, so you can trust that we know how to get your gear to you securely. From the packing tape we use to the insurance we purchase, every step is about ensuring your vintage hi-fi piece arrives ready to plug and play, exactly as described.

Our Passion for Hi-Fi History and Preservation
We have a soft spot for every piece of audio equipment that passes through our hands. Sure, we’re running a business – but at heart we’re audiophiles first and foremost. We began (and continue) as a labor of love, born from a genuine passion for hi-fi gear and the music it reproduces. Many of our team members started out as collectors and tinkerers themselves, long before joining the company. That’s why our mission goes beyond just buying and selling; it’s about preserving the legacy of vintage audio and sharing it with the community. We often say that these aren’t just electronics – they’re pieces of history. Every classic Marantz receiver or Thorens turntable has a story, and our job is to honor that story by treating the equipment with respect and care, and finding it a happy new home.
When we test and refurbish a 1970s amplifier, we’re conscious that we’re bringing back to life something that might be older than some of our customers. There’s a reverence in that process. We take pride in doing it right – using the proper methods, sometimes sourcing original parts, and always maintaining the integrity of the piece. Our warehouse is a living museum of audio history, with gear from every decade. One day we might be handling a 1965 Fisher tube amp, the next day a 1985 Nakamichi cassette deck. It never gets old for us. We genuinely love this stuff, and that passion is what drives the care and attention we give to each unit.

Another big part of our ethos is community. We’re not isolated dealers; we’re active members of the vintage hi-fi community and the broader audiophile world. We share tips, restoration notes, and historical info on forums and our blog. We’ve been featured in magazines like Stereophile for our expertise in used gear, and we’ve earned the trust of over 100,000 fellow enthusiasts over the years. We see ourselves as custodians of hi-fi heritage, bridging the gap between generations of gear and owners. When you buy a classic piece from us, you become part of that story as well. It’s extremely rewarding for us to hear from customers who are enjoying a piece of gear that we rescued and restored. Maybe it’s their first time experiencing the warm glow of tubes or the tactile pleasure of a vintage turntable – and we helped make that connection possible. That’s what keeps us motivated every day.
Finally, we want to reassure you that our commitment to these values – expertise, honesty, outstanding packing, and genuine love for the gear – is unwavering. We know entrusting someone with your hard-earned money (and perhaps a piece of audio history) requires trust. Over 20+ years, we’ve worked hard to earn that trust, one successful delivery at a time. Our feedback is full of praise not just for the items themselves, but for the care we put into every aspect of the transaction. We don’t take that for granted. By combining professional standards with a personal, enthusiast’s touch, we aim to give you the best possible experience.
When you deal with RAV, you’re dealing with people who love hi-fi as much as you do.
