The MX123 held down the top of McIntosh's home theater line since 2019, which is a long run in a category where HDMI specifications and immersive audio formats keep moving. The MX124 is the replacement, and the changes are substantial rather than cosmetic.

Four subwoofers, independently managed

Thirteen audio channels and four subwoofer outputs support layouts like 7.4.6 and 9.4.4. The subwoofer count is double the previous model's, and that's the headline for anyone who has fought with bass response in a large or awkwardly shaped room four independently managed outputs give you real options for smoothing out modal problems instead of hoping one or two positions work.

Your choice of room correction

Licenses for Dirac Live Room Correction, Dirac Live Bass Control, and Audyssey MultEQ XT32 all ship with the processor. That's unusual most processors commit you to one platform. Having all three means the calibration approach can be matched to the room and to the installer's preference rather than the other way around.

Video that won't need replacing

All seven HDMI inputs handle 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, VRR, and ALLM, so gaming sources and disc players get the same treatment regardless of which input they land on. Three outputs, one with eARC, cover a primary display plus a second zone.

Made for integrators

Configuration is handled through a web interface, with pre-configuration and file upload so a unit can be set up before it ever reaches the rack, plus backup and restore for experimenting without risk. RS-232 and IP control are both available, and Control4 SDDP certification means discovery is automatic on a Control4 system. Nine 32-bit DACs handle conversion, and Roon Ready certification with 32-bit/192kHz streaming means the processor holds its own on two-channel music, not just film.
