Tuneful Cables Western Electric Natural Sound Speaker Cables are built for listeners who want the most natural, organic, emotionally direct speaker cable we make. These are made with genuine Western Electric KS13385L-1 16 AWG wire, a rare vintage tinned-copper cable that has become legendary among tube amp, horn speaker, vintage hi-fi and “real sound” listeners.

This wire is no longer available in regular production. Once it is gone, it is gone. That scarcity is part of the story, but not the whole story.. The real reason this cable matters is it's sound: extremely natural, relaxed, colorful, and human.

Compared with Tuneful’s Belden 9497 speaker cable model, the Western Electric cable sounds richer, more organic, and more emotionally complete. The Belden is lively, clean, and open. The Western Electric goes deeper into tone, texture, and flow.

Compared with our Jupiter 16GA speaker cable, the Western Electric is less about hi-fi refinement and more about musical truth. It does not push detail forward or spotlight the edges of notes. Instead, it lets instruments sound round, breathing, and believable. Voices have body. Strings have wood and rosin. Cymbals decay naturally. Bass feels tuneful and integrated rather than oversized.

Each stereo pair is assembled by hand in Brooklyn using Western Electric KS13385L-1 16 AWG tinned-copper wire, custom-made Tuneful silver-plated beryllium BFA banana plugs, and Cardas Quad Eutectic silver solder. The result is a speaker cable that feels simple in the hand but deeply special in the system.

How they sound:
These are the most natural-sounding speaker cables in the Tuneful lineup. They are warm without being dull, detailed without being analytical, and open without being bright. The presentation is relaxed, continuous, and deeply musical.

The magic is in how little they seem to impose. Rather than sounding “fast,” “etched,” or “audiophile,” they make a system feel more like real musicians playing in a real space. They are especially beautiful with tube amplifiers, vintage receivers, high-efficiency speakers, horn speakers, Tannoy-style dual concentrics, single-driver speakers, and systems where tone and timing matter more than spectacle.

Why Western Electric wire:
Western Electric wire has a special place in audio because it comes from an older engineering world: simple materials, tinned copper, cloth-era construction values, and a sonic character that modern cable designs often try to imitate but rarely capture.

The KS13385L-1 16GA wire is prized because it combines the easy musicality of tinned copper with a very natural tonal balance. It does not sound like a cable trying to impress you. It sounds calm, complete, and right.

Jeff Day’s writing on Western Electric WE16GA helped bring this wire into the modern hi-fi conversation, especially through the recommendations of Shirokazu Yazaki of SPEC Corporation. Yazaki-san used Western Electric WE16GA speaker wire as a personal reference and described its character as “artistic and organic sound quality.” That lines up closely with what we hear from these cables: natural tone, vivid color, and a strong emotional connection to the music.

Customer anecdotes:
One Tuneful customer who had previously bought our Belden cables came back for the Western Electric speaker cables and said the combination compelled him to comment. He wrote that it was not the most revealing cabling he had heard, but it was the “most engaging,” and that it worked well with both tube and solid-state components.
